It's about time!

The announcement read: Mykael & Jaden are pleased to FINALLY announce the marriage of their mom Bonnie to their dad in training, Randy....

This has been an exciting thing to look forward to in our family. And it turned out to be a really fun night!
Everyone looked really good. And everyone had a great time! It was a relaxed atmosphere. Not stuffy and proper like most weddings can be.
I've gone back and looked at old pictures. Read old journal entries. And it always says the same thing. "Look how much you've grown." And they just keep growing!
 What's up stud!?
This was requested by Randy. He wanted the two kids to sit down and make a list of everything they expected and wanted out of him when becoming their dad. Technically he's been here for more than half their lives...but it was still important to him that they do this. He really is so great with them and perfectly compliments the four of us parents.
Bonnie's bouquet. This really shows you how gorgeous the orchids were!
All the boys....minus the other dad.
Cutting a bit of my heart the cake apart.
"Bring him to me boys!" quoted Bonnie
 He really didn't want to.
 Really. Didn't.
But Ash was all too accomodating!

It was such a fun night that when we left....all three boys had melt downs on the way home. And it was only 9:30pm. Good times!
**************************
A little background for those of you who don't know....Bonnie is my husband's ex-wife and for 7 of the 8 years I've been married to Jared...Bonnie and I have been really good friends. We spend ALL our birthdays and Christmas' together, in addition to school events and fun activities. It's not "normal" for most split family "standards"...but it was easier to get along then to hate each other. Plus the kids benefit from it. There are moments of disagreements when it comes to raising the kids, but nothing that isn't worked out or big enough or worth breaking our "family" apart. At this point....I don't think anything will. And that's cool. It's become that strong.

Oh my Oh my Oh Dinosaurs!

This one was really fun to make. But took a lot of "research". I don't know too much about dinosaurs other than books we may have somewhere around here. My boys never went through a dinosaur phase like a lot of little boys do.

I wasn't quite sure how to mold a dino...but I think I figured it out without it looking too odd. "Stick some spikes on it and call it a dinosaur". "Yea, I think that's what God said." A conversation I had with birthday boys dad. :o)
After I applied the lava, Mykael suggested I had orange and yellow to make it look like a fire. So...I did. It's a cute fire now!

I wanted to incorporate dino bones somehow so I made dirt and drew them on with royal icing. I kept laughing because how cute they looked. I really didn't know how to do dino bones either....it just happened.
Looks pretty cool to me! Luke loved it and that's all that mattered! The only drawback after completing the cake, Luke's mom made me cut it up and serve it. Since I was the one that assembled it. I was the one who knew how to destroy it.

Bottom tier: Cherry chip cake with fresh sliced strawberries in glaze. Second tier: chocolate cake with coo whip chocolate filling. Volcano: rice crispy treat.

$20 dollar cut

This is a friend of Jaden's. And he's had long hair for a LONG time! We've tried talking him into letting Jared cut every time we see him. He came by one saturday for a "trim".

Jared had just cut Jaden's hair crew cut short and I told this boy that if he let Jared cut it like Jaden, I'd give him $20. He took a long time to think about it. And with much persuasion from a friend that came with him and Jared and Jaden....he finally made a decision.

 He took the money!
Smart boy!....and handsome too!

He really did like it....he doesn't look like it in this last picture because I made him stop to get a close shot of it. He wanted to run home and show his dad. He even came back the next day to say he liked it. :o)

Somewhere in Time

May 1 2004  3 weeks old  "...I love being your mom and taking care of you! I hold you all the time and that may not be a good thing. I just can't help it. You're so- cuddly and soft and warm. I love you to pieces."

October 17 2004 6 months old  "Your personality is becoming more and more refined everyday. What a goof and jokester you're turning into. I just love you so much!"

February 17 2005  10 months old  "The other day we all were at Grandma and Grandpa's house eating chips and dip. You were sitting on my lap eating a chip. The next thing I know, you reached over, dipped your chip and took a bite. You dipped it a couple of times and decided to ditch the chip and stick your fingers in  instead. More for the feeling than the taste."
May 17 2005  1 year old "The newest thing you have started doing is that when I have to reprimand you, you stand really still and not make eye contact with me. Your eyes will wander but you avoid me. It's like you think that if you don't move I can't see you. I know you hear me but your're pretending not to. I have to hide my smiles so you don't see, cause then it turns into a game."
November 10 2006 2 1/2 years old"...you like to run in the dirt and kick up the dust. Any car that does it, you think is pretty cool. You still love trackhoes, dump trucks, and all other heavy construction equipment."..."You look up to Mykael and Jaden and are always wanting to do what they are doing. You'll even get ready for 'school'. If they walk out the front door, you're right behind them standing as tall as you can, acting so big."
January 28 2009  5 1/2 years old  Me "Ash, I had a dream last night and it was kind of scary." Ashton "Mom, I did too, but mine was more dignified."
Dylan "Mom, I love Ashton. He's my brudder."
As much as I want to freeze time and replay it over and re live all the precious moments, I can't.
So I will just enjoy the moments that are given to me every new day.

I owe it all to this cake!

This cake has to be the most important cake when it comes to my cakes. Because....it was the request of this cake that got me started on the whole cake making thing I'm doing right now.

Bonnie, (my husband's ex-wife....oddly, we're friends and quite close as far as an ex and new wife type of relationships go.) got engaged a year and a half ago. Maybe even two years. And she told me that she wanted me to make her wedding cake. I laughed at her and told her she was crazy! She told me that I could start practicing "now" with all the kids and their birthdays and by the time the wedding came, I'd be ready.
Again...I told her she was nuts, but decided to try working with fondant to see if it was even going to be a possibility. So I made Mykael's cake. I did nothing but roll it out and cover a cake. No coloring, no molding, no trickery. Anything beyond that was "too scary" for me. I successfully achieved Mykael's cake with some pretty welcoming praises. After that....I hit the ground running and haven't looked back. The wedding was put off another year and in that year.....well.....you know what I've been doing. :o)

Cake: Bottom tier-chocolate cake with cool whip chocolate filling. Middle and top tiers-white cake with buttercream filling.
Oh! and GORGEOUS fresh blue orchids to cascade down the side. *Orchids are HARD to handle! Such fragile stems that would break everytime I tried to wire them up to be able to stick into the cake.

Chocolate Home Improvements

Anyone else having issues with blogger? UGH!

I made a lot of cakes lately and with doing so many in such a short amount of time, I wanted to make sure they were still very individual. And that I didn't make any of them look the same.
I've been wanting to get my hands on chocolate and play with it a little and see if I could manipulate it in ways the professionals do. I saw this once and wanted to try it. In the process I learned a few things:
1. A regular hershey's candybar from the store is NOT the kind of chocolate you want to do something like this.
2. Chocolate has a mind of it's own. If it wants to be manipulated, then, by its own choosing, it will do what you want it to do. And only then!
3. Use molding chocolate. It sets up faster and holds the shape and doesn't melt when you touch it like the hershey's did.
4.It's a lot like my photography skills. I go through a LOT of blurry pics to finally get a piece that looks focused and finished.
5. I WILL conquer chocolate. I'm am the superior being here!

After about 2 1/2 hours of melting chocolate, waiting for it to set up, and scraping enough scrolls, I finally got enough to wrap around this little 6inch cake. I'd LOVE to do this to a wedding cake! It would be gorgeous! And impressive! And a sure ticket straight to the looney bin! That would be a VERY time consuming project.

**********************************************
It's been a long standing joke with my family and my dad. All my life, he's been a home remodeling contractor, fix-it handyman, roofer, flat-tire fixer, leaky drain reverse-r. And him hurtings hinmself getting hurt on the job.

I remember quite frequently he'd come home with some blood blister or purple finger. I'd ask him what happened and he'd say "I smacked it". Eventually the question evolved to "how'd you do that one?" pointing to the injured appendage with the resulting,... same response.
He found a shirt of a plump cartoon handyman who on it had just drilled a hole through his hand looking all goofy. He thought it was hillarious and he'd wear the shirt on occasion. A few years ago, he found this exact same shirt in the store and bought it for our oldest boy. "To help him remember grandpa."
Turning 60 CAN be a big deal, if there is someone there to make it a big deal. I'm kind of a big deal type of gal, so I chose to make it big by making a cake. The cake itself wasn't the "big" factor.. the theme, I so lovingly choose to immortalize in fondant, was. My dad isn't a "plump"y kind of person. The man can eat a whole burger joint and his shape remains the same. So this handsome little handyman was skinny. I molded the body around a wire "frame" to give it more support while he dried. I'm not a sculptor so I had to call in backup for the head/face. I have a very dear friend that amazingly turned a picture of my dad into a rosy cheeked, toothy grinning head, with perfectly parted hair. Just like my dad!
I however made the "wood" by coloring tan fondant with more brown food coloring. My husband had a hard time believing it wasn't real, until I dropped a completely dried piece on the floor and it shattered.
Originally my idea was to cover the cake in "planks of wood" but it didn't look how I wanted it. SO...I pulled it all off and went to bed. I had to sleep on it to figure out what I was going to do. Good thing I did because I woke up to this idea! Green-grass with a border of a measuring tap. I still wanted the cake to have a "built" feel to it so I "seamed" the edges and used silver wire to "nail" the letters on the side.
I was running out of time with this cake and there is a LOT of different things I wanted to add, like different tools and hoses and ladders, but this was ok with me to send as is.
At least he had his hammer! :o)

Under the Sea

I have been wanting to make a sea creature cake for a really long time, but no one ever requested one.

Till two weeks ago. A freind of a friend saw some of my cakes and wanted to order one. :o) Happy day!
She said they were going to the aquairum (or having an aquarium themed party) and wanted something with and "Octopus, stingray, and of course nemo fish". The rest was up to me. *love that!
I added, a sea horse. starfish, a shell, and seaweed.

I did marble the fondant with blue and green but it's not as noticeable as I'd like, in the pictures. In person...it was pretty cool. (if I do say so myself.)

(Cake: White cake dyed blue and green for checkerboard. Top tier: marbled blue and green "white" cake with freshly sliced strawberries and glaze.)
